His passionate interest and experience include preservation and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Mr. Nelson was involved in the restoration of the historic Texas & Pacific railroad station in downtown Fort Worth and the adaptive re-use of a 1910 era commercial building as a recording studio for the Southland Corporation near Downtown Dallas.
“Working as a builder in the past has equipped me with many broad-based experiences from which to coordinate both design and constructability of a project. Being in the field as an estimator and project manager has also influenced my approach to the practice of Architecture by giving me a better understanding of the project from the builder’s perspective. This perspective has, in turn, given me a unique and necessary ability of combining design skills along with a full understanding of construction. Together, these much required skills provide solid and successful building results.”
Mr. Nelson began his career working in contracting, preparing shop drawings, estimating and bidding commercial projects. He has worked as an estimator and project manager for both public and private commercial renovation and new construction projects. At JPJ Architects, responsibilities included investigating, preparing construction documents and providing construction administration for the re-roofing of numerous Southwestern Bell Telephone facilities in North Texas.
Past experience working as Architect with another firm
At JPJ Architects Mr. Nelson’s primary responsibilities were investigating, preparing construction documents and providing construction administration for numerous re-roofing projects for Richardson I.S.D. and Southwestern Bell. He co-authored a Re-Roofing Procedural Manual, with Weldon Nash. The manual was prepared for use by Southwestern Bell staff when employing a Consulting Architect for re-roofing SWB projects throughout Texas. The Manual established uniform standards and procedures for analyzing the condition of existing roofing systems, determining an appropriate new system, preparing bidding and construction documents and administering the construction phase of a re-roofing project.
