Best Western Sunset Suites, San Antonio St. Paul Square Historic District.
This project called for the adaptive re-use of an historic building to serve as space for the lobby, meeting rooms, fitness center and other public spaces with a four story addition to contain 64 guest suites. A glazed elevator lobby was used to carefully connect the smaller historic structure to the new addition. The new addition was designed for an infill lot and was placed on the site to enclose a gap in the existing urban street wall. The building was designed to correlate with the existing 19th century commercial buildings that remain in the historic district. ERN Architects represented the Owner in public hearings with the City of San Antonio for local tax abatements and design approval. The overall project was approximately 47,100 square feet. Edward Nelson served as project architect and provided design services, consultation, led the production of construction documents and provided construction administration services. The project opened in 2001.
