Urban Infill – Reuse
We recognize and respect how buildings along a street can create spaces that attract people, inspire activities and social interaction. We consider the creation and maintenance of the urban street wall fundamental in establishing that sense of space in an urban environment. The firm’s approach is centered in creating public space and mediating the conflict between pedestrians and the automobile.
As modem building programs have become more specialized, older buildings have been rapidly discarded. There has been a vocal reaction to this loss of historic buildings and it has been discovered that their value is not solely determined by their column grid or floor to ceiling height. The adaptive re-use of historic buildings is a creative response to preservation. Our supplementary work with new buildings and their spatial programs provides a reservoir of informative ideas, concepts and strategies regarding the potential change in use of an existing facility.
